Do you have Green Fingers?

We all know that going to the supermarket/greengrocers and buying fresh fruit and vegetables will be expensive and to maintain our 5 a day could cost a lot of money.

So why don’t we have a go at being frugal and save ourselves the cost and start growing our own vegetables?

Where do we start? First of all, we need either a garden or an allotment. Or, if you have neither, why not try a window box to plant strawberries in or plant containers to grow runner beans. You won’t have as many vegetables as an allotment, but what you do have will taste better and cost very little.

Next we need to decide what vegetables or fruit we are going to plant. Think of the vegetables or fruit which you love the most and buy most of, and start with those.

Instead of going out to a garden centre and buying loads of seed trays etc. look around your home, or even start saving your old yoghurt pots, takeaway containers, margarine tubs or any plastic boxes. These will be great for your little seedlings and you can even keep them on your window cill. What a great frugal tip!

When you have decided which seeds you would like to purchase, try somewhere like Lidl, Poundstretcher or Wilkinsons where they sell seeds much cheaper than any garden centre therefore saving money

Fruit

With tomatoes you could scoop the pips out of a tomato and leave them to dry on a piece of kitchen towel and then plant them the next day. Great frugal tip!

Strawberries are a good fruit to grow. You always get good fruit year after year. You may know somebody who has strawberry plants already, they may give you a couple to start you off, or buy some from a car boot. If you start off with two plants you will have more next year.

Vegetables

Rhubarb is a relatively easy to grow, buy or ask someone for a ‘crown’ then plant and leave for a year to build up strength. Then year after year you will have a good rhubarb harvest.

Lettuce can be grown in pots or containers. Keep an eye on them because slugs and snails love eating lettuce.
