Compost

How does it work?

There are two stages in making compost, first of all, the bacteria and micro-organisms break down the material which causes the temperature to heat up to over 60°c. Then, as the heap cools, worms and insects break down the rougher compost. It would usually take about 3-9 months to mature, although it may take longer during the winter months because the compost heap temperature will be cooler.

When using your compost, take it from the bottom then the partly composted and newer material remain to compost further.

If you would like to start making your own frugal compost, purchase a compost bin from most DIY stores or you could make your own. A timber frame is all you need and can be attached to posts in the ground. Position in a sunny, well drained area and cover the compost with a plastic sheet or an old bit of carpet - something that will keep the rain out and the heat and moisture in.

The next step would be what to put in it.

In your compost ....

Don't put in .........

To accelerate your compost turn the heap occasionally and add a crumpled newspaper. Make sure you chop your pruning into small pieces and add a little water when the hot weather is here.

Not only is compost good for the environment but think of all the money you will save on the compost from the garden centres. This is another great frugal way of living frugally.
