Method
Preheat oven to 180oc/350oF/Gas mark
4.
Peel and quarter the potatoes and boil them ready for
mashing.
Finely chop the onion and add to the mince.
Stir until mince is light brown. Drain away any excess
liquid.
Peel and slice the carrot. Add carrot to mixture and season
to taste.
Dissolve the gravy granules in 1 pint of boiling water and
add to mixture.
Stir until the mixture has thickened and transfer to
casserole dish.
Cover the mixture with the mashed potato.
Cover and bake for 30 – 40 minutes.
Uncover and sprinkle the grated cheese over the potato and
then bake for a further 15 minutes.
Alternatively, you could bake for 30 – 60 minutes then remove and sprinkle with cheese and place under a hot grill.
Did
you know?
This
recipe was originally cooked to use any left over meat and
vegetables, so you could vary the ingredients to your
taste.
It
is only when it is made with lamb that it can be called
‘Shepherds Pie’. Beef is often used as an ingredient which is
wrong.
