Cleaning

You do not have to go out and buy the latest cleaning product advertised on the television just because they say it does this and that and comes in a pretty bottle? Let's think frugally. How can we be frugal with our household products and start living frugally. We could save money as we probably have ingredients in our store cupboards that would do just the same job. If we haven't then after reading this perhaps we will!

Bathroom

Run the shower for five minutes to steam the dirt free. Then, mix baking soda and lemon juice together to clean those bathroom tiles. Lemon juice is acidic and will naturally lighten the tiles and the baking soda controls any smell.

When cleaning the bathroom window use 1 tablespoon of white vinegar to 1 pint of water and wipe up and down on the inside and side to side on the outside. That way you will be able to tell which side the smears are on. Dry the window with crumpled up newspaper for a perfect shine. You could use the free newspaper that comes through the door.

Cleaning the bath is one chore I detest. But, if your bath is particularly dirty and you have some flat cola lying around, pour the cola into the bath and leave for about an hour. Alternatively, you can use white vinegar and water with a 1:5 ratio.

If you have a stainless steel sink, rub a little olive oil on a soft cloth and this will shine your sink. To shine your stainless steel sink taps rub them with a cut lemon. If you use a micro-fibre cloth to clean your bath and sink it will not leave a residue.

For your toilet, use borax which is environmentally friendly, anti-bacterial. It is a natural stain remover and deodoriser. Always ensure that you rinse thoroughly after use.

Did you know .....

  • That you should flush with the toilet seat down because otherwise germs can escape and can float around your bathroom for up to 2 hours?

If you have stubborn stains down your toilet, pour flat cola down and leave for about an hour. For best results clean your toilet in this order: cistern, handle, outside of bowl and u-bend, lid, seat, under seat, under rim and finally inside the toilet. If you would like a beautiful smell in the bathroom for a change place a fabric softener sheet in the waste bin or place a few drops of essence oil on the light bulb. The heat from the light bulb will release the aroma.

Bedroom

Every morning air your bed by throwing back the covers and remake your bed in the late afternoon.

To reduce unwanted dust mites wash your pillow cases, sheets and duvet covers at least once a week. I read somewhere to wash your bedding on a 60o wash to kill those dust mites, but is 60o environmentally friendly? I suppose it's a question of: do you live with your little friends to be environmentally friendly?

When drying your pillows fluff them up in the dryer with and old but preferably clean trainer or a couple of tennis balls.

It is recommended that we air our mattresses about once a month, when doing so sprinkle bicarb on the mattress to absorb any moisture.

Each time you change your bedding, turn your mattress and give it a good vacuum to get rid of any dust mite droppings.

Did you know .....

  • That we loose up to one pint of sweat in our sleep every night and 5g of skin each week?

  • The average mattress can house up to 10 million dust mites?

  • 25% of a two year old pillow carries dust mites and their faeces?

Living room

Don’t forget to clean under your sofa and of course under the sofa cushions.

When your fireplace is not in use, place a saucer in the hearth with baking soda in and this will help eliminate those fireplace smells.

If you have any scorch marks on your rugs you could get on your hands and knees with a toothbrush to remove burnt fibres and soot.

If you have any candle wax on your carpet place greaseproof paper over the wax and a warm iron over the greaseproof paper.

Use a solution of one cup of olive oil to one cup of lemon juice to clean your wooden furniture. The lemon juice adds an extra sheen.

Did you know .....

  • 25% of your vacuum cleaner is made up of human skin?

  • 40% of all heat loss is through the loft and walls?

  • By turning down your thermostat by 1 degree you could save on your gas/electric bill by 10%?

  • 85% of electricity is used by televisions and vcrs when they are on standby?

  • A clean doormat catches up to 70% of dirt?

Kitchen

When your oven is still warm cover oven grease with salt and that way when the oven cools you can just sweep up the mess.

Did you know .....

  • The average dish cloth contains a million more times germs than a toilet seat?

  • 1 gram of house dust equals 500 dust mites?
